Sometimes you might buy a chest of drawers with the specific idea of placing it in a certain spot in your bedroom. But you need to be a bit careful of whether it will be in direct sunlight. This is particularly important if you have a wooden chest of drawers that has not been painted or stained in any way.
This is because over time you will end up with it becoming bleached or darkened by the sun. When this happens it can result in the unit starting to become unevenly coloured – and if this causes one area to be darker than another it can look awful.
There isn’t generally a lot you can do to rectify this either if it happens. You could try sanding down the unit but if the sun has damaged it considerably even this may not work. The best bet would be to repaint it as this will cover up the damage.
Of course the idea of having a sun bleached chest of drawers like this won’t happen overnight. It would take many months of the unit sitting in the same position for this to happen. But all the same, if you are not aware of it when you buy your new wooden chest of drawers you will be setting yourself up for a big disappointment further on down the line.
So before you buy anything, wait until you have a sunny day in your bedroom and throw the curtains open first thing in the morning to see how and where the sun goes during the day. See how far across one side of the room it starts, and where it eventually ends as it goes down in the evening. Obviously you will need to be home all day to keep popping in to see how the room is affected in this way.
You can then decide where the best position will be for a wooden chest of drawers to go. You might find your house is situated in such a way that the bedroom is unaffected by the sun at any point. This is good news as you will have the maximum number of possibilities to think about.
But if you do find the sun becomes a problem at least you will be able to tackle it efficiently and ensure that your new chest of drawers looks just as good in several years time as it will when you buy it.
